The Challenge
The atomic layer deposition research community - spanning universities, equipment manufacturers, and materials scientists worldwide - had no centralized digital hub. Research papers were scattered across disconnected journals. News about breakthroughs traveled slowly through mailing lists. Equipment buyers had no way to compare ALD systems from different manufacturers. Conference coordination happened over email chains, and the community's peer review process was fragmented across institutional silos.
Our Solution
We built a comprehensive community platform with four integrated modules: a news portal with editorial workflow for publishing research updates and industry news; a journal management system with full peer-review workflow (submission, reviewer assignment, revision tracking, and publication); an ALD products marketplace where manufacturers list equipment with specifications, filterable by system type, function, and manufacturer; and an events hub for conference management with registration, scheduling, and abstract submission. ElasticSearch powers cross-module search across papers, products, and events. The platform uses Laravel with role-based access - researchers, editors, manufacturers, and administrators each get tailored dashboards.
Results & Impact
- Connected researchers across 50+ institutions in 20+ countries
- Peer review cycle reduced from weeks to days with structured workflows
- Single platform replaced 4+ disconnected tools (journals, email lists, spreadsheets, event platforms)
- ALD product marketplace became the industry's go-to equipment comparison resource
- Global event coordination with abstract submission and automated scheduling
