The Challenge
Traditional social networks are built around who you already know, not where you are. Discovering people at the same venue, neighborhood, or event requires exchanging handles or scanning QR codes - friction that kills spontaneous connection. Existing location-sharing apps raise serious privacy concerns, and none offer meaningful group functionality beyond basic check-ins.
Our Solution
We developed Luep as a cross-platform mobile app (React Native) backed by a Laravel API. Users create or join location-based groups automatically when they enter a geofenced area. The architecture includes real-time WebSocket messaging, token-based authentication with role-based access, granular privacy controls (users choose exactly what location data to share and when), and a content feed filtered by proximity and group membership. The Laravel backend handles geo-queries via PostGIS extensions, push notification orchestration, and a comprehensive REST API documented with OpenAPI for future third-party integrations.
Results & Impact
- Simultaneous iOS and Android launch from a single React Native codebase
- Location-based discovery drove 70%+ of new user connections
- Zero privacy incidents since launch - granular controls passed security audit
- Real-time engagement rates 3x higher than traditional social feeds
- Full API documentation enabled future partner integrations
